taking a break

hey my lovely bookoholics ❤ ❤ ❤

i need to do something that i really don’t want to do. 😦 i am taking a break from blogging and maybe reading, i am not sure.

i’ve been struggling with my health a little bit the last few months. maybe you read about it here and there. but yesterday i went to the doctor and something popped up, that shouldn’t have. i am ok guys, do not worry. but of course i worry after the last months and i need to let go of all the stress. blogging is fun, but it can also be stressful. always posting, commenting, reading other blogs. and i think that i need a break, to focus on myself a little bit more. relax. meditate or whatever. 😀

so, yes, i am going on a hiatus. i may come back for a post if i feel like it, but don’t be mad, if i won’t read all your posts or comment on your blogs. i guess i just need some time for myself and sort this thing out.

i love you guys, you are amazing and i wish all this wouldn’t happen. but sometimes you have to do what you have to do! many hugs to all of you! i will talk to you soon! 🙂

“heir of fire” – buddy read discussion – part I (spoilers ahead)

happy sunday my lovelies ❤ it’s time for our first discussion for “heir of fire” by sarah j. maas. as you guys might know, i am doing a readalong with the wonderful adrienne from @darque dreamer reads and kathy over @books and munches. we’re in the middle of book three in the “throne of glass” series now and it’s time for another q&a. our final discussion will be next sunday, so watch out for the post. 🙂 there will also be a q&a on adrienne’s blog, so go over and check it out! 🙂

hieroffire

here’s a short synopsis of “throne of glass”, if you haven’t read the book or don’t know what the book series is about:

throne of glass” is about 18 year old celaena, who was trained to be an assassin and ends up as a slave. she is freed by crown prince dorian to participate in a competition, where the winner becomes the new assassin of the royal family. celaena doesn’t think twice, because she wants her freedom. but with her being in that competition, things start to happen, that make her life complicated: friendships, feelings, killings, magic & mystery.

1.) What do you like/dislike most about part one?

adrienne: “I like the addition of the witches because their part seems quite interesting, and I want to know more about the wyverns. I dislike the “relationship” beginning between Dorian and Sorscha because I had hoped he would pine after Celaena for a while as a changed man.”

me: “i dislike that it doesn’t have the same feeling than the first two books had. it’s not that funny at all. i have maybe one section marked with my green tab. thinking about book one and two, there were way more. i am also not a big fan of the three different settings. celaena in wendlyn, dorian and chaol back in the glass castle and then manon. it just feels not right. the thing i like so far is, that we still have dorian and chaol’s perspective. i was afraid they wouldn’t be in this book, but i am so happy that they are. “

2.) Do you like Dorian’s plot so far?

adrienne: “I am not liking things going on with Dorian at the moment. His role is feeling kind of forced and awkward.”

me: “i actually do. i like that he met sorscha and that something is happening between them. this makes my heart beat faster for celaena and chaol. but i also have a feeling, that something bad is going to happen to sorscha. we’ll see. so far i enjoy this story.”

3.) What do you think about Chaol teaming up with Aedion?

adrienne: “I think it is quite interesting for Chaol to be teaming up with Aedion and it seems like such a Chaol thing to do because he knows he screwed up with Celaena over Nehemia.”

me: “i was really surprised, when chaol started to talk to aedion and told him the truth about celaena. i didn’t expect that at all, considering chaol probably knows the consequences. but he also loves her and wants to protect her, so i am very happy, that he doesn’t stand on the king’s side, but does things against that.”

4.) Who’s your favorite new character and why?

adrienne: “I don’t really have a favorite new character yet. I am still liking Celaena and Chaol.”

me: “i don’t like manon, because i can’t connect with her so far, maybe because i have no idea where this is going. aedion is still a mystery to me and i am not sure if he is good or bad. i have a feeling that i need to know more about sorscha to like her. and rowan, well, that guy made me angry a lot of time. but i am slowly getting used to him and i think i will like him at some point. right now, there is not really a favorite.”

5.) What do you think will happen with Manon and the wyverns?

adrienne: “I have no clue what to expect from the witches because I don’t know how they will find out who killed Baba Yellowlegs, and I find it really hard to believe the king will keep his bargain with them.”

me: “right now, i have no idea. i am pretty sure, that manon will find out about who killed baba yellowlegs and that her path will cross with celaena at some point. but i have no idea where this is going at all.”

6.) How do you feel about Celaena’s and Rowan’s story, especially the ending of part one?

adrienne: “I am not a big fan of the interaction between Celaena and Rowan. It just doesn’t feel like it fits, and if they are supposed to be cousins, there shouldn’t be any romance going on, but the ending kind of felt like it was leading to that.”

me: “as i mentioned before, i was mad at rowan so many times. i was also afraid, that something between him and celaena would happen, but i don’t think that anymore. i am glad, that he made her break down. that she showed her true feelings and all his training is showing progress and i like that. i like seeing what happens with celaena. but somehow his grumpiness turned too fast into an alliance with celaena. something is wrong about that and i am not sure what. we’ll see.”

7.) What do you expect from part two?

adrienne: “I am expecting Celaena to prove herself to Maeve. I am expecting Chaol’s plans to return to his father to get ruined somehow, and I expect Dorian to get in to some sort of trouble with Sorscha.”

me: “i expect that at least manon’s and celaena’s path crosses at some point, because i don’t like these two separate stories, since i can’t connect with manon at all right now. i also expect that something between dorian and chaol will happen. that they talk or that dorian will be a part of chaol’s team. i hope for more action, because this book is too slow for my taste right now. there needs to be more action. maybe celaena will meet maeve again and something will happen. i also want more fun. i want the old feeling back.”

that was our q&a for the first part of “heir of fire”. what do you think? did you feel the same way? what was your favorite thing happening in the first part?

i really hope, that this book picks up and brings things together. i don’t like that it’s split that way. maybe that’s the reason why it feels so slow and that nothing much exciting is happening. i am disappointed so far and i hope, that it will be better in part two. give me back the old feeling! 😀

as i said, adrienne will also post a q&a on her blog, so go check it out. on december 17th our final discussion and review will be up, so you can see how our feelings developed for this book. have a great sunday everyone! 🙂 ❤

“We’re looking into each other’s eyes, and I think we’re both a little stunned by how great that kiss was.”

bookreview

thanks so much to edelweiss and kids can press for providing me with this eCopy in exchange for my honest opinion.

what it’s about:
it’s christmas eve in new york and charlotte is desperately awaiting her flight back home to england. after a bad break up she just wants to leave the place she wanted to study in the future. but you don’t always get what you want. so when her flight gets cancelled, she finds herself in the biggest cities in the world. but she’s not alone. because fate means otherwise. she meets anthony at the airport and witnesses a scene that crushes him. together they go on an adventure in new york and try to forget their past relationships.

what i think:
i love christmas. it’s definitely my favorite holiday. i love new york. it’s one of my favorite cities. i am a romantic. this is a love story. so when i read the synopsis for “kiss me in new york” it was clear: i NEED to read this book. and i had a lot of fun doing it.

charlotte is great character, that i immediately liked. she got dumped by her ex-boyfriend and all her hopes and plans were crushed. it’s totally understandable, that she wants to leave new york immediately. also, i am a huge fan of british characters. so i was a fan of charlotte from the start. her heart broken she needed to make a decision and as fate always does, she meets this cute guy, that’s going to help her. anthony is also very sweet and having his heart broken this way just hit me in the heart. i totally get, why it was a great idea to pair these two together. and the way it was done, is just perfect. i won’t go into too  much detail, but i loved the basis of this adventure. it was cute and fun and actually this kind of stuff can really work.

the best part about the story for me was new york though. i mean, it was clear right from the start, that this is a love story and that it will end the way it ended. it’s just predictable from the start. but that doesn’t mean, that it was executed badly. it’s the other way around. it was executed very well. i laughed a lot about everything that happens to charlotte and anthony. i was in love with mistake right from the start and it’s just so much fun going on a tour through new york with them. i enjoyed it very much.

the story also touches some deeper stuff, which i didn’t predict at all and which touched me so much. i teared up and i love how it got resolved in the end. i love it, when there are unpredictable things happening in a cute love story. i mean i could predict the ending, but what happened in between was cute, fluffy, exciting and also emotional. that’s the way it should be.

all in all this book gave me everything i wanted: a cute love story in one of the best cities in the world and all that during christmas. i enjoyed it very much and it warmed my heart. there are only two things i didn’t like, because it didn’t resonate with me personally very much. the first thing are anthonys thoughts during the first part of the book. of course he is crushed, but come on! be a man! i mean, a person who does THAT to him doesn’t desevere his time or thoughts AT ALL!!! i was really mad at some points. the other thing i didn’t like was one part of the ending. it considers charlottes decision. and i know, that the author wanted to let charlotte make her own decision, but i could definitely feel, that charlotte based her decision not on herself. i was sad about that, because that’s also a personal thing for me that i just can’t understand. i think these two things touched me personally too much and that’s why i got emotionally more invested and didn’t like in the end.

what you should know:
“kiss me in new york” by catherine rider is a perfect, cute love story for the christmas time. it’s fun, adventurous and it takes place in one of the best cities of the world – new york. if you like predictable contemporaries, that are fun to read and also deep at some points, then this book is definitely the right one for you.

top 5 wednesday: let’s be a grinch today

//
top 5 wednesday is a weekly challenge where you can pick your top 5 for the topic of the week. you can find more information about it on goodreads.
//

top5wednesday

//
this weeks topic is:
Bookish Things You’re a Grinch About

— Since being a grinch is a funny thing, try not to make this serious topics that make you angry (like lack of diversity or abusive relationships in fiction, etc) as this is supposed to be more of a petty bookish things you hate. This can be stuff about covers, dumb tropes, etc. Have fun with it.
//

my lovely fellow bookoholics ❤ today is saint nicholas day in germany and usually kids get chocolate in their boots. i am not a child anymore, so no chocolate in my boots. but that’s ok. i should be in a good mood but i am not. one of my best friend told me something another person said to her (i am not going into detail, because she doesn’t want to). let’s just say, that the other person said something very terrible to her and i just can’t understand how there are people out there who can hurt other people that way. words are so powerful and now my friend is crushed and i am soooooo mad. yes, let’s be a grinch today, which fits perfectly with the topic 😀 (ok, my mood is kind of getting better, because i need to smile about that)

1.) this one specific font

darkershadefont

i think i told you before, that there is one font in books, that i absolutely don’t like. you can find it in the uk paperback of “a darker shade of magic” by v.e. schwab. i read all the books of the series on my kindle, because i wanted to avoid that font. and the reason is so stupid haha. i just can’t read books fast with that font. my eye always get stuck and it takes me way longer to read a book. i don’t know why. i’m weird 😀

2.) love triangles

throneofglass
i am not the biggest fan of love triangles. i know, that they can be executed very well. but, the thing is, i am a hopeless romantic. give me a good romance and i am totally down for it. best thing ever! i watch romcoms all the time, i love a great love story. me happy. but, with a love triangle, my heart always breaks. there is always heartache involved and not just on character side, also on my side. i am in between and when someone gets hurt, i get hurt. yes, i am that empathetic. i don’t want anybody to suffer and with a love triangle that’s just not avoidable.

3.) different sizes in a book series

annaandthefrenchkiss

soooo, usually i don’t mind the editions. but when i start a series i want it to match. of course everybody wants that. so one day, i bought the “anna and the french kiss” trilogy by stephanie perkins. i heard about it, bought it and of course i haven’t read it yet. that’s me. but i have all three books on my shelf. the thing is, i bought all three books at the same time. and they all arrived at the same time but book three was bigger than the first books. i asked myself: why? why are you doing this? this doesn’t make sense! it’s a series. it should match!

4.) mass market paperbacks

outlander
if you had asked me two years i ago, i wouldn’t have mind mass market paperbacks at all. but since i am reading this much lately, i really do not enjoy them anymore. they are small, they have the smallest font and if you break the spine it doesn’t look good. i mean i don’t mind broken spines at all, but there are nice broken spines and not so nice broke spines. you know what i mean? 😀 it’s more the size of mass market paperbacks that bothers me.

5.) physical/ebook/audiobook

IMG_2362

this one could be controversial, but i just need to say it. i read physical books. i read ebooks. and i listen to audiobooks. so i am using three different formats. sometimes i am traveling and i would love to only have my kindle with me. sometimes i am walking long distances and want my audiobook. if i really want to finish a book, i only have one possibility. i get why it’s not easy and why authors deserve their money for their awesome books. but sometimes i wish, that there would be a discount for ebooks/audiobooks if you already purchased the physical copy. i mean it’s the same book and i don’t want to spent more money, just to have the book in a different format. as i said, i know why this isn’t possible, but a discount would be great. i am not even talking about for free. give me the book i already bought for a discount so i can get it in another format. that would make my life so much easier. 😀

that’s it guys! here are some things, i am a grinch about. and it’s ok to be a grinch from time to time. but now, i don’t want to be a grinch anymore and happy times are ahead. have a great day and let me know what bookish things you are a grinch about! 🙂

top ten tuesday – bookish settings i’d love to visit

it’s tuesday and i am again participating in the “top ten tuesday”, which is a weekly challenge hosted by the broke and the bookish. this weeks topic is:

//
Ten Bookish Settings I’d Love to Visit
//

happy tuesday my lovely bookoholics ❤ considering what’s been going on in the community lately because of netgalley and goodreads, i wanted to say a few words. i maybe once participated in a goodreads giveaway and i request very few arcs, just because i am a mood reader. so although i don’t use that services much i am very mad at this. and mostly sad, because it feels, as if we international bloggers don’t count that much. which sucks. i have met so many people in this community that are all over the world, not just the usa. and we all have one thing in common – books. and it doesn’t matter where we come from, where we live or how we got those books. it just matters that we have something to talk about. that we can recommend books to each other, that we can gush about books. that we learn about new authors. and until now it was easier for us to spread the word. now it won’t be that easy anymore and that’s so sad. and it doesn’t help at all. it doesn’t help new authors or authors in general. everything is limited now and that’s so sad, because we do have things to say. we also can spread the word and help promote authors, discover new favorites and just share the love. we matter too and it’s sad, that this is happening. i know, that for me this changes nothing. i will still buy my books and i will still blog, because i can’t imagine my life without it and you guys. i just wanted to say, that it’s not fair. and makes me sad. and i want these decisions to be taken back!

ok, now that i got that off my chest, i want to talk about books. because that’s why me and you are here. let’s see which bookish settings i’d want to visit today 😀

“bookish settings i’d love to visit”

1.) all the londons in the “shades of magic” trilogy

 adarkershadeblack

this one is pretty obvious, isn’t it? i’d want to visit that world, because i want to see kell, haha. but also the whole concept of all those londons is amazing. i have never been to london before and here i would see three, maybe four different ones with some of my favorite characters. sign me up!

2.) scotland from the “outlander” by diana gabaldon

Dragonfly in Amber - Diana Gabaldon

i finally got my hands on the “dragonfly in amber” audiobook by diana gabaldon. i started book two in the series in february but i stopped. i hope this audiobook will help me get through it. but listening to it, i have this huge urge to go to scotland and see everything. i love ireland, you guys know this, but i have never been to scotland! i really, really need to go there and visit this wonderful country. and seeing all the filming locations for the series would be awesome!

3.) the moon from “artemis” by andy weir

artemis22

there’s a reason, why i am choosing the moon over mars. i mean, mars with mark watney by my side from “the martian” would be pretty awesome. but there is no food. he made the potatoes kaputt. so life would eventually come to an end. but the moon in “artemis” has pretty good conditions. they have food, drinks and there is communication. and since i am a fan of galaxy and space, this would be a great place to visit.

4.) alaska from “the smell of other people’s houses” by bonnie-sue hitchcock

thesmellofotherpeopleshouses

well, it’s alaska. i don’t have much more to say. alaska has been a dream of mine to visit. so of course it’s on this list here.

5.) “warcross” by marie lu

warcross
wouldn’t it be great to visit emika and the whole “warcross” game? i mean, YEAH!!!

6.) the grishaverse from “six of crows” by leigh bardugo

sixofcrows

i’m just really, really curious about this world. i would love to visit it and the crew. it seems dark and bad, but visiting it would be so cool. also, i could hug kaz, even if he would kill me, i would do it! 😀

7.) the tower from “the thousandth floor” by katherine mcgee

thousandthfloor

i am not a big fan of heights, but when i read about the tower in “the thousandth floor” i was very fascinated. i mean new york as one huge tower? yes, i’d like to see that!

8.) middle earth from “the lord of the rings” by j. r. r. tolkien

lordoftherings

who didn’t want to visit middle earth while reading or watching “the lord of the rings”? i mean the filming locations are still to visit, so heck yeah, that would be a cool trip!

9.) thornfield from “jane eyre” by charlotte bronte

 janeeyrepurple

i love victorian classics and it would be amazing to visit them all. but since “jane eyre” is my favorite classic, of course i would love to visit thornfield the most! ❤

10.) the pacific crest trail from “wild” by cheryl strayed

wild

i love hiking and just taking a walk in general. it clears my head, nature is beautiful and imagine all the audiobooks i could listen to while hiking the trail. 😀 it really would be an amazing experience i would love to do one day.

that’s it. these are some of the bookish settings i’d love to visit! 🙂 do you agree? are you coming with me? which setting would you love to visit? let me know!

calendar girls: favorite book of the year released in 2017

happy monday my lovely bookoholics! ❤ how are you all doing? it’s the last month of this year and i have to say, that this topic will ruin me. 😀 i have read so many great books this year, all 2017 releases, that affected me so much, that i loved so much, that broke me, brought me tears, made me happy and made me think. i can’t possibly just pick one, can i?? that’s like choosing your favorite child, or in my case my favorite pet. i can’t. i will cry. they are all different but they are all great. i can’t pick my favorite book of 2017 yet. please someone help me *takes a deep breath and tries to calm herself*

– one hour later –

ok, i looked at my stats. i have 8 five star books that were published in 2017. five books are ya-contemporary. one book is fiction/mystery and two books are fantasy. i won’t include the fantasy books, because these are sequels. just accept that and go with me here. that makes six books to choose from. and i don’t knooooooow. help me!

– one more hour later –
(let’s do an introduction first)

calendargirls

calendar girls is a monthly blog event, that was created by melanie and flavia. this book group was inspired by the 1961 song “calendar girl” by neil sedaka and is supposed to motivate bookish discussions among bloggers. every month a theme is chosen by all participants and you are supposed to pick a book that in your opinion fits that theme perfectly. on the first monday in the month you publish your pick and the reasons why you think this book is the best in the chosen category. the hostess’ collect all picks and every third sunday of the month the picks are discussed on twitter with the hashtag #CGBChat at 8pm EST.

if you want to know more about the calendar girls, head over to melanie’s and flavia’s blogs. 🙂

“December, You’re the present ‘neath my Christmas tree.”

the theme for october is: YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OF 2017

– again one hour later –

ok, before i start rambling again, let me just show you all of the books, that were released in 2017 and were my favorite this year:

all of these books got a five star rating from me. i loved them all. they just spoke to me. they got me and made me feel something. (you see, i am rambling)

  •  “autoboyography” by christina lauren is about bisexual tanner and sebastian who grows up in a mormon family. it’s their story and i learned so much reading this book.
  • “words in deep blue” by cath crowley is about rachel who lost her brother and moves back to her old town and meets her old best friend henry. this book broke me. it hit me so hard and i was a sobbing mess.
  • “the hate you give” by angie thomas is about starr, who witnesses a brutal crime and needs to decide if she’s going to fight against it or not. i think everybody knows this book by now and how emotional it is.
  • “180 seconds” by jessica park was a complete surprise that i read recently. it’s about allison who went through a lot in the past and build up walls around her. after meeting esben and having a life-changing 180 seconds in her life, she starts to break down these walls. this book made me cry so much.
  • “starfish” by akemi dawn bowman is about kiko who can’t take her family anymore. she wants to get into her favorite school just to start a new life. it’s not that easy though. but she gets help from her old best friends jamie.
  • “watching glass shatter” by james j. cudney is the only fiction novel on my favorites list. i probably don’t have to say how much i loved jay’s debut novel. it’s a family drama, that is beautifully written, has you on edge and let’s you feel all the feels.

– another hour in which i think about all these books –

so now please tell me, which one of those i should choose? i don’t know!!! but i guess i have to. i will do it. yes i am. i am going with the book, that let me walk around a week after reading it, still not understanding all my feelings. why affected me so much. that book, that i wanted to pick up immediately after reading it and reread it again. that book, that made me cry so much. that book that made me tab the s*** out of it. that book that came at the exact right time. and that book is:

wordsindeepblue

words in deep blue” by cath crowley

this book was a complete surprise, affected me in ways i didn’t even know a book could and i will definitely pick it up again very soon. actually i want to start rereading it right now! so i guess, it was a good choice! 😀

//

goodreads synopsis:

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city – and to the bookshop – to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

//

to all the other books. i love you too. in a different way, because you all are perfect and special. i just had to choose one, which i am still mad about! 😀

this was hard guys. so hard. i’m out of words. please forgive my rambling. but try to pick your favorite, after reading 122 books this year… 😀
