top 5 wednesday: let’s be a grinch today

top 5 wednesday is a weekly challenge where you can pick your top 5 for the topic of the week. you can find more information about it on goodreads.

this weeks topic is:
Bookish Things You’re a Grinch About

— Since being a grinch is a funny thing, try not to make this serious topics that make you angry (like lack of diversity or abusive relationships in fiction, etc) as this is supposed to be more of a petty bookish things you hate. This can be stuff about covers, dumb tropes, etc. Have fun with it.

my lovely fellow bookoholics ❤ today is saint nicholas day in germany and usually kids get chocolate in their boots. i am not a child anymore, so no chocolate in my boots. but that’s ok. i should be in a good mood but i am not. one of my best friend told me something another person said to her (i am not going into detail, because she doesn’t want to). let’s just say, that the other person said something very terrible to her and i just can’t understand how there are people out there who can hurt other people that way. words are so powerful and now my friend is crushed and i am soooooo mad. yes, let’s be a grinch today, which fits perfectly with the topic 😀 (ok, my mood is kind of getting better, because i need to smile about that)

1.) this one specific font

i think i told you before, that there is one font in books, that i absolutely don’t like. you can find it in the uk paperback of “a darker shade of magic” by v.e. schwab. i read all the books of the series on my kindle, because i wanted to avoid that font. and the reason is so stupid haha. i just can’t read books fast with that font. my eye always get stuck and it takes me way longer to read a book. i don’t know why. i’m weird 😀

2.) love triangles

i am not the biggest fan of love triangles. i know, that they can be executed very well. but, the thing is, i am a hopeless romantic. give me a good romance and i am totally down for it. best thing ever! i watch romcoms all the time, i love a great love story. me happy. but, with a love triangle, my heart always breaks. there is always heartache involved and not just on character side, also on my side. i am in between and when someone gets hurt, i get hurt. yes, i am that empathetic. i don’t want anybody to suffer and with a love triangle that’s just not avoidable.

3.) different sizes in a book series

soooo, usually i don’t mind the editions. but when i start a series i want it to match. of course everybody wants that. so one day, i bought the “anna and the french kiss” trilogy by stephanie perkins. i heard about it, bought it and of course i haven’t read it yet. that’s me. but i have all three books on my shelf. the thing is, i bought all three books at the same time. and they all arrived at the same time but book three was bigger than the first books. i asked myself: why? why are you doing this? this doesn’t make sense! it’s a series. it should match!

4.) mass market paperbacks

if you had asked me two years i ago, i wouldn’t have mind mass market paperbacks at all. but since i am reading this much lately, i really do not enjoy them anymore. they are small, they have the smallest font and if you break the spine it doesn’t look good. i mean i don’t mind broken spines at all, but there are nice broken spines and not so nice broke spines. you know what i mean? 😀 it’s more the size of mass market paperbacks that bothers me.

5.) physical/ebook/audiobook

this one could be controversial, but i just need to say it. i read physical books. i read ebooks. and i listen to audiobooks. so i am using three different formats. sometimes i am traveling and i would love to only have my kindle with me. sometimes i am walking long distances and want my audiobook. if i really want to finish a book, i only have one possibility. i get why it’s not easy and why authors deserve their money for their awesome books. but sometimes i wish, that there would be a discount for ebooks/audiobooks if you already purchased the physical copy. i mean it’s the same book and i don’t want to spent more money, just to have the book in a different format. as i said, i know why this isn’t possible, but a discount would be great. i am not even talking about for free. give me the book i already bought for a discount so i can get it in another format. that would make my life so much easier. 😀

that’s it guys! here are some things, i am a grinch about. and it’s ok to be a grinch from time to time. but now, i don’t want to be a grinch anymore and happy times are ahead. have a great day and let me know what bookish things you are a grinch about! 🙂

  1. Love it!
First, happy Nikolaustag! Here in Belgium we celebrate was well 🙂 There are some differences though, as in Belgium the Saint is accompanied by his side kick Black Pete (Zwarte Piet), whereas I believe you guys have the Christkind coming over to deliver the presents.
Second, that person sounds like a nasty one, and I am sorry for your friends.
Third: yeah some fonts are particularly hard to read! I LOVE love triangles because I want the suspense and the love and the suffering. But yeah, for a super emphatic person, I understand that it doesn’t work so well 😦 I also prefer all the books of the same series to be the same size/edition, otherwise it is visually disturbing. i classify my books by genre and then by size. This would ruin my classification. I love super heavy books BECAUSE I can break their spine. hehehe. Great that you are so versatile with the way you read books. I wish I was.

  2. Your idea of offering books in multiple formats for a discounted price is a really good one! I don’t read ebooks very often, but I would love to have the audio book versions of the physical books I buy 🙂

  3. There was (not sure whether amazon is still doing it) a feature that allowed you to buy ebooks at a discounted price or even for free if you purchased the physical copy. It was only available in the US though (shocker…). Alles Gute zum Nikolaustag! 🙂

  4. Like Sev said it’s also Saint Nicolas here in Belgium LOL. I do agree with everything and especially with the love triangle and size in books!!! Now I would add heroines being a doormat. I can’t stand a girl with no backbone!!!

  5. Happy Saint Nicholas day! I’m sorry about your friend. 😦 I hate when people hurt my loved ones, so I feel you.

Also, this list! Idk about the font in ADSOM because I’ve only read the first book and it was on a kindle, but I am SO HERE for the rest of the list, particularly #3-#5! Mass markets… ugh.

  6. Love triangles are so…blah. One of my favorite series has a love septagon!
I organize my bookshelf by author alphabetically and I hate it when the whole series doesn’t fit on one shelf so you have to have part of it on the second shelf.
Also, the second level of my bookshelf has small colorful books and the top has darker books. This was just a coincidence. And then I got tower of dawn and it’s this huge dark book in the middle of a bunch of colorful books and I can’t change it because then it wouldn’t be alphabetical anymore.

  7. In regards to a discount on eBooks/audiobooks, I think they should include a discount code when you buy a physical copy. That way readers like you won’t have to spend extra on other formats.

And I so agree with you with mass market books. Younger me would be thrilled to buy one since they’re a lot cheaper, but as years went by, I grew tired of the tiny font and the bulkiness of it and of course the broken spine…

    Great list by the way!
