Make the machine part of your life. A part of your day. Do not use it a few times, then need room on the table and close it back into its case to sit on a shelf in the back of a closet. Do that and you may never write with it again.

what it’s about:
this is a collection of seventeen short stories about different people, different times, different adventures, different situations and problems. but a lot of them have one thing in common: a typewriter.

what i think:
what you need to know: i am a big tom hanks fan. i love him as an actor and i love almost all movies with him. “forrest gump” and “you’ve got mail” are two of my favorite movies of all time, both for very different reasons. so when i heard, that tom hanks wrote some short stories, i couldn’t wait until i got my credit for audible. and as soon as i had it, i started listening to the audiobook, which was narrated by tom hanks himself. so you can imagine, i was very happy, while walking through the streets with tom hanks in my ear. i could have done that all day. his voice is amazing and the narration of this audiobook is phenomenal.

now, i am not a big fan of short stories. somehow i don’t click that well with them, because they go by too fast and i am left wanting more. but this audiobook came at the right time. my week was very busy, i had to walk a while every morning and so these short stories were perfect as a companion. some were amazing, other’s didn’t click that well with me, but i will go into them in more detail now.

1.) three exhausting weeks:
this is a cute story about relationships and friendship and how other people can change your life completely. i really enjoyed it and laughed a lot, because anna is such a hilarious character. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

2.) christmas eve 1953:
a really emotional story about christmas and the aftermath of the second world war. this hit me right in the heart. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3.) a junket in the city of light:
unfortunately this story about a hollywood star didn’t click with me at all. i couldn’t focus on it, because i didn’t like the characters and story itself.

4.) our town today with hank fiset- an elephant in the pressroom:
this story also didn’t click with me that well, which was unfortunate because the character came back in some later stories.  ⭐⭐

5.) welcome to mars:
loved this one! it’s about the relationship between a father and son on mars. it made me really emotional and in the end i cried. somehow it hit me hard. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

6.) a month on greene street:
this is a story about a divorced mother who starts a new life. it’s a good story, but i didn’t feel emotionally involved that much. ⭐⭐⭐

7.) alan bean plus four:
this was AWESOME!!! i love the movie “apollo 13” with tom hanks and i was so happy, that he wrote a story about flying to the moon. best thing: the characters from his first short stories appeared again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

8.) our town today with hank fiset- at loose in the big apple:
this one was better than the other hank fiset story, because the positive thing was new york. i love new york and revisiting it, was fun! ⭐⭐⭐

9.) who’s who?:
this is a story about an actress, who tries to find her career in new york. all in all, this was a good story, but i didn’t connect with the main character sue at all. ⭐⭐

10.) a special weekend:
i cried so much at the end of this story. a little boy spends the weekend with his mom and has the best day of his life. it was funny but also very emotional. it hit me right in the heart. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

11.) These are the meditations of my heart:
a girl starts new after her boyfriend breaks up with her. and she meets a man who gives her a typewriter that changes her life. loved it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

12.) our town today with hank fiset- back from back in time:
again, not a big fan of hank fiset. although the typerwiter part made me smile a lot. ⭐⭐⭐

13.) the past is important to us:
this story stuck with me for a while. i wasn’t a big fan of how the main character left things with his current life. because he travels back in time, which is possible in this story. he does it because of a reason and i had all the feels because of that reason. i made me very emotional, but i didn’t like how he left everything behind. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

14.) go see costas:
a bulgarian from greek comes to the usa and tries to build a life there. this isn’t that easy for him and i was hit hard after hearing about all of his struggles. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

15.) our town today with hank fiset- your evangelista, esperanza:
once again, not the story for me, which is sad, but oh well, what can you do. ⭐⭐

16.) steve wong is perfect:
the characters of the first stories come back and this time it’s about bowling. the story is hilarious and i felt, that i got really attached to these characters. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

17.) stay with us:
the last story is about a wealthy man and his assistant who take a break from the big city las vegas and find a different world deep in the countryside. i really enjoyed the performance of this, because there were sounds and tom hanks got some company in narrating this book. my highlight: wilmer valderrama. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

what you should know:
if you love tom hanks as much as i do and you are a fan of short stories, then you NEED to listen to this audiobook. it’s amazing and the stories have so much more impact while listening to tom hanks reading them. there is everything for everybody. there are funny stories, sad stories, happy stories, emotional stories and all different genres. you will be entertained and definitely surprised in the end, that tom hanks can also write. this man is awesome.

  1. I was so surprised to see a book by Tom Hanks in my BOTM selection this month! I didn’t end up choosing it, but I still want to read it. Now I kind of want to go with the audiobook though if he narrates the stories himself! My favorite movies of his are Cast Away and The Green Mile. 😊 Thanks for the review! I was patiently waiting for someone to write one haha.

  2. This review gives me life! I am currently halfway through Christmas 1953, and i am just looking for excuses to listen. I have already decided that i want to ask for a copy of the audio for Xmas (i am currently borrowing it from the library).
So glad you liked it, and posted about it!!

  3. I had no idea about this book! I love You’ve Got Mail, it’s one of my favourite movies. And Tom Hanks seems like such a nice, genuine guy. I’m glad you like the book, it must have been cool having him narrate it 🙂

  4. Not a fan of the short story and just don’t go there… but I made an exception for Joanne Harris (huge fan of hers) and will do so for Tom too. Thanks for the review of each story. There are a couple there that I can’t wait to read!

  5. Because You Love To Hate Me definitely turned me off when it comes to short stories.. :’)
I feel like one bad story can ruin the whole thing and make you not want to read the other ones. I struggled to pick up that book every single time and ugh. Probably staying away from anthologies for a while now.. :’)

Good thing this book wasn’t like that for you though! 😀
